Origin of the Lusitano horse

The Lusitano horses are one of the premier horse breeds in Portugal and they have a very rich history. It can be pointed out that it was only in the recent times that these Lusitano horses came to be recognized as a separate breed, though in the ancient era they were broadly acknowledged as a kind of the Iberian horses. The significant evidences regarding the origin of the Lusitano horses have been available mainly from historical and archaeological sources. Some of the cave paintings and frescoes depict the activities of various horse breeds and these early murals dating back to about 20,000 BC go to prove that the Lusitano horses evolved around 25,000 BC in the form of its earliest predecessor, the Sorraia breed of horses which are also one among the most well-known varieties of Portuguese horses. The name Lusitano was derived from Lusitania which may be referred to as the primitive name of the Portuguese territory when it was under roman subjugation. Lusitania in its turn was derived form the name of Luso who was the son of the roman god of wine and merriment, Bacchus.
