Lusitano horse colors
The Lusitano horses are the best known of the various horse breeds in the country of Portugal and it is interesting to note that its name echoes historical resonances. The name ‘Lusitano’ is drawn from Lusitania which was the primitive name of Portugal when it was subjugated under roman rule. The name Lusitania was derived from the name Luso which refers to the son of the roman god of wine and merriment, Bacchus. They were initially known as descendents of the ancient Iberian horses and it was only in the late 1960s that the Lusitano came to be recognized as a separate breed of horses. The Lusitano horses today are extremely favoured and praised for their proficiency and efficient abilities displayed during bullfights and wars. Over the years the Lusitano horses have been recognized as great riding horses and it is their gentleness and temperament that allows them to make instant connections with the rider.

The most traditional color of the Lusitano horses is gray. Gray color can be quite variable from dark gray till white. With time the gray Lusitano horses get progressively lighter until in some cases they can be almost white. Gray color is greatly appreciated.
The Palomino Lusitano is a very popular and demanded variant of the Lusitano horse breed. It is to be noted that the Palomino refers to the color of the horse and the Palomino is a gold colored horse having white colored mane and tail. The Palomino Lusitanos are usually dominated by golden bodies having a reddish tinge as a base color. There are certain varieties of Lusitano horses which are known to be darker like chocolate brown tones or even lighter like pale whites. The Palomino Lusitanos are much desired among the Lusitano varieties and their majestic physical features play an important role in establishing their worth as riding horses. The Roman nose or sub-convex heads along with a thick mane and strong muscular legs make them eligible for being efficient in varied forms of dressage. It is to be noted here that these varieties of horses are quite rare and uncommon which further increases their demand.
The Cremello Lusitano refers to a popular variety of the Lusitano horses which are immensely in demand along with another variant of the Lusitano horses, namely the Palomino Lusitano. The Cremello Lusitano refers to the variant of the Lusitano horses which are of pale whitish or cream color. It has often been noticed that the Cremello horses are confused with the Palomino variety because of their alikeness in skin tones at times. However a real Cremello Lusitano has certain specific characteristics. They are usually light colored and are supplemented with blue skin and pink eyes. in fact all Cremello Lusitanos are characterized by these similar features. The Cremello Lusitanos are quite rare breeds though they have a growing demand.
