Lusitano horse main characteristics

The Lusitano horses are the most favored and distinguished of the various Portuguese horse breeds. They are well-known for their proficiency as war horses and in bullfights and various factors contribute to their efficiency in these cases. The Lusitano horses have pronounced physical features which are majestic and are also responsible for making the Lusitanos the preferred horse breeds among all. The Lusitano horses possess a sub-convex contour which is also referred to as the ‘roman nose’ and according to the notions of the art of equestrianism, it is believed that such features imply that the horses are well-suited for any form of combat which is essential in the battlefield or during bullfights. They have beautiful and thick manes on the head which contains huge and projected eyes. In general it can be noted that the Lusitano horses are quite muscular and strong and weigh around 500 kilos. Their well-developed physical features enable them to move swiftly in fast paces without causing any discomfort to the rider.

A descendent of the primitive Iberian horses, the Lusitanos are efficient in different forms of dressage like the high school dressage movements. It is the physical strength and flexibility of the Lusitano horses coupled with their passionate and calm character that significantly establishes the fact that the Lusitano horses are one of the best among the various horse breeds. This is one of the reasons why the Lusitanos have also emerged as a status symbol and are reared by many of the prominent and rich families in Portugal.
