The Lusitano horses are descendents of the Iberian horses and their name has a lot of historical significance. This is because the term Lusitano is derived from Lusitania which is the primitive name attributed to Portugal when it was under roman rule. The Golega horse fair is a very famous horse fair which is held in Portugal and the roots of its beginning can be traced back to the early decades of the 18th century. The main purpose for organizing the horse fair in Golega was also to promote the region and its abundant agricultural products. The Lusitano horses have since the early years constituted a very significant role in these Golega horse fairs. This was primarily because most of the prominent Lusitano horse breeders inhabited around the Golega region where the horse fair was held. Therefore since then the Golega horse fair and the Lusitano are synonymous with each other and the growing popularity of the Lusitano horses have greatly benefited the fair with more and more people across boundaries visiting the Golega horse fair.
